Why the Convenience Center Is Not the Answer for Project Debris

Most of what comes out of a remodel, cleanout, or roofing job in Tullahoma, Winchester, or Manchester can go straight into a roll off dumpster. A short list cannot, and loading the wrong item can mean a rejected load at the landfill or a disposal fee passed back to you.

County convenience centers are built for household garbage and recycling, not for what comes out of a renovation.

Franklin County states it plainly. Construction and demolition debris, painted or pressure treated wood, and house, shed, and garage cleanout loads are not accepted at any county convenience center or at the Joyce Lane facility.

Those loads have to go to the Republic transfer station on Tullahoma Highway in Estill Springs, and commercial waste of any kind is turned away at county sites.

Coffee County centers accept household trash and a few recyclables such as cardboard, scrap metal, and aluminum, but a truck bed of drywall and old cabinets is not what they are set up for.

A roll off dumpster exists to fill that gap. Dumpsters Plus hauls the load to a permitted disposal facility and handles the tipping fees inside the quoted price.

Local Know-How

Three Local Things to Know Before You Load

Older Homes and Asbestos

A lot of housing stock in Tullahoma, Winchester, and Manchester dates to the 1940s through 1970s. Floor tile, pipe insulation, siding, and some ceiling textures from that era can contain asbestos.

If you are gutting a house from that period and are not sure, have the material tested before demolition. Asbestos is never accepted in a dumpster and cannot be handled by a rental company.

Weight, Not Just Volume

Every quote includes a tonnage allowance. Shingles, plaster, tile, and wet brush eat into it fast. If you are unsure whether your load is bulky or heavy, the sizing guide walks through it, or call and describe the pile.

Treated Lumber and Painted Wood

Franklin County convenience centers will not take painted or pressure treated wood, which surprises people mid-project. The dumpster takes it. Deck boards, fence posts, and old trim all go in.

How to Load a Dumpster So Nothing Gets Flagged

The container in the photo is a 20 yard set for a whole house cleanout in Woodbury. A few habits keep a load like that moving.

Keep banned items out from the start. Sorting a full container at pickup is the one thing that slows a job down.
Put heavy material in first and spread it across the floor rather than piling it at one end.
Break down cabinets, doors, and furniture so they lie flat. Air is wasted space you paid for.
Do not load above the top rail. Anything sticking above cannot be hauled safely and has to come out.
If a questionable item turns up during the cleanout, set it aside and call. Chad will tell you on the phone whether it goes in.
FAQ

Dumpster Rules Questions

Can I put a mattress in a dumpster in Tennessee?

+

Yes. Mattresses and box springs are accepted in Dumpsters Plus containers. Franklin County residents who do not have a dumpster can take one old mattress to Joyce Lane in Winchester when replacing it.

Can I throw away a TV in a dumpster?

+

Yes. Dumpsters Plus accepts televisions, monitors, and computers. If you only have electronics and no other debris, Coffee County takes them Thursdays at Rural Solid Waste in Manchester and Franklin County takes them at Joyce Lane.

Can I put a car battery in a dumpster?

+

No. Dumpsters Plus does not accept batteries of any kind, including lead acid car batteries. Most auto parts stores take old car batteries, and Joyce Lane in Winchester accepts rechargeable and lithium batteries year round.

Can I put dirt or concrete in a dumpster?

+

No. Dirt, concrete, asphalt, block, and ash are too heavy for a standard roll off. In Franklin County those materials go to the Republic transfer station in Estill Springs. Call Dumpsters Plus before renting if a slab or driveway is part of the project.

What happens if I put something banned in the dumpster?

+

The item has to come out before the load can be hauled, and if the disposal facility rejects material, that cost can come back to you. Calling before loading a questionable item avoids the problem entirely.
